Music has always been my passion, and my dream was fulfilled in 2014 when I opened my own record shop in Shoreham.
I actually moved to Sussex from London 25 years ago. Having lived and worked in Portobello Road , I found a similar vibrancy in Brighton, and I felt immediately at home, with the local music scene and mix of people.
For many years I actually worked in the antique rug and textile business, but music was always incredibly important to me and a huge part of my life. Moving to Shoreham I worked as a chef whilst caring for my children and selling a few records on a stall before taking the plunge, following my heart, and opening Retrorama Record Shop.
Starting with just a few records, I now stock a huge variety of Artists and genres, and still get excited when I find rare editions hiding among collections. I am always happy to offer a free valuation and honest appraisal for anyone considering selling their collections.
The shop sells both pre-loved and new vinyl, plus music related gifts such as coasters and prints. The best part of the job is chatting with my customers. I have many ‘regulars’ and I’ve got to know their musical tastes and will put records aside for them or try and obtain the album they’re searching for.
I also love introducing customers to new music, suggesting things they may like based on the records they’re browsing.
Pre-covid I held a monthly in-store gig showcasing both local and international musicians and a music/film supper club. I hope to restore these events once we are back to normality.
I hope that my record shop is friendly and accessible to everyone, where you can enjoy the music, ask for advice, take your time without pressure, and feel relaxed.
I try to cater for every taste from The Carpenters to Kraftwerk, but regulars will know that my personal favourite will always be Bowie. I love working in Shoreham because the people are so genuine and friendly. I feel very lucky to work among ‘friends’ every day, seeing familiar and new faces, and to chat about music all day long.
